Periodontal disease – Dental disease caused by buildup of plaque and tartar on the teeth. Can cause bone decay, abscessed teeth, painful gums, heart / liver / kidney muscle changes, and overall decline in pet health. Dental disease is a painful disease that can happen as early as 3 years of age.

Symptoms:

Bad breath, foul odor from mouth
Teeth that are discolored or have build up on the surface
Chewing on one side of mouth or abnormal chewing
Pawing at the sides of the mouth
Drooling
Food falling out of mouth
Decreased appetite or refusal to eat

Prevention:
Brushing your pet’s teeth from an early age a few times weekly with pet toothpaste and soft bristle toothbrush
Dental treats or dental chews
Having dental exam done by your veterinarian yearly
Professional dental cleaning done by veterinarian if needed (scaling / polishing teeth, removing tartar, extraction if needed)
