Heartworm Disease

heartworm diagram

Heartworms can be found in all 50 states. Dirofilaria Immitis is a worm that is transmitted from mosquitoes to your pet when they are bitten by an infected mosquito. Animals who spend a lot of time outdoors, traveling, and who live near or with an infected animal are at a higher risk for infection. Common clinical signs of heartworm disease include exercise intolerance, coughing/wheezing, and poor haircoat. Heartworm test can be run to diagnose the disease, if positive, recovery is possible although it takes several months. Giving your pet heartworm preventatives year round is the best way to protect them. Puppies are able to start Heartworm prevention at 8 weeks of age. We offer Heartgard Plus, Interceptor Plus, and Simparica Trio as our heartworm prevention products.
